Review: “A Home for the Holidays” (2023)

Fancy banner done in a navy ground. On either side, Hollywood red curtains tied back with pearl-white cords. In the center of the banner are four gold-navy-&-red art deco-styled brackets framing out the words “Books by Alicia Presents” (in gold), an art deco element beneath, then “Christmas Romance Reviews” (in pearl white).
Basic banner of navy ground and very light gold art-deco brackets in the upper left and bottom right corners. In bolded pearl white, a movie title is written. This one says, “A Home for the Holidays.” Beneath it, in gold, is the date (2023) the movie came out sandwiched between two gold art deco elements.

  • Shannon Elizabeth as “Ella Chandler”
  • Daniel Cudmore as “Russell Lewis”
  • Dawn Nagazina as “Ginny”
  • Dreyden Stephen as “Ben”
  • Location: fictitious Colorado town (filmed in Alberta, Canada)
  • Platform: Tubi
  • Date: December 6, 2024
Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Classic Cinema Scale.” Beneath it, three film reels—the top in gold, middle in silver, bottom in bronze. Each has words done in navy. For the gold reel, “Golden Age Worthy: Exceptional performances, chemistry, and production that capture the magic of classic Hollywood.” For the silver, “Matinee Material: Good entertainment with solid elements, though not quite reaching classic status.” And the bronze, “B-Movie Blues: Missing the mark despite potential.”
  • Matinee MaterialA pleasant surprise that proves sometimes the best holiday gifts are the unexpected ones
Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Tissue Box Scale.” Beneath it, a column of tissue boxes, all in red, gold, and navy—the top is a single box, middle is two, bottom is three. Each has words done in navy. For the single box, “One Box: Keep a tissue handy, but your makeup is safe.” For the duo, “Two Boxes: You’ll definitely need those tissues, but you’ll still be presentable after.” And the trio, “Three Boxes: “Is pepperoni okay?” territory — don’t even bother with mascara!”
  • One BoxKeep tissues handy for the heartwarming community scenes, though it won’t have you sobbing into your hot chocolate

I’ll be honest — I only clicked play because of the renovation angle (though that opening font was pretty nice!).

As someone who loves watching old houses get new life (as long as it’s a remodel and not a remuddle), I couldn’t resist a Christmas movie about saving a historic home. And you know what? Sometimes low expectations lead to the best surprises!

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “The Chemistry Test” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Our leads handle their roles with refreshing competence. Sure, there are moments when reactions feel a bit overdone, but overall, the performances work.

The first kiss is… well, let’s just say Russell understands that kisses start with a pucker, even if our leading lady seems uncertain about this basic principle. Come on — you’ve just gotten your dream house, a ready-made family, and true love! A little more enthusiasm in the kissing department wouldn’t hurt!

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco red-&-navy brackets in the upper corners. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Classic Connection.” Beneath it, in navy, “Golden Age Hollywood dressed even secretaries in furs and designer gowns — pure escapism that gave wartime audiences hope. Today’s realism has its own charm, but sometimes I miss that touch of movie magic!”

Subsection Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in Hollywood red, are the words, “Set Design & Décor” that are sandwiched between gold-&-red art-deco elements.

The Christmas decorations hit exactly the right note — charming and rustic, just what you’d expect from a real family. Maybe slightly professional-looking, but not so perfect that you can’t believe regular folks did it themselves.

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco red-&-navy brackets in the upper corners. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Décor Pro Tip.” Beneath it, in navy, “When decorating a historic home for Christmas, take cues from the house’s character. Rustic and charming beats perfect and polished every time!”
Subsection Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in Hollywood red, are the words, “Wardrobe & Styling” that are sandwiched between gold-&-red art-deco elements.

The wardrobe stays true to the setting — practical winter wear for a snowy Colorado town. Cozy sweaters, warm coats, scarves, and mittens feel authentic rather than costume-y. Sometimes simple is exactly right.

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco red-&-navy brackets in the upper corners. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Fashion Pro Tip.” Beneath it, in navy, “While modern films opt for realistic wardrobes, they often miss opportunities for tasteful glamour. A character can dress appropriately while still maintaining that classic movie star polish!”
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “The Romance Formula” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Our story kicks off with what might be the most creative meet-cute in Christmas movie history.

Picture this: Ella, finally getting her dream fixer-upper after ten years of hoping, encounters a stranger in her new house. Her only weapon? A mounted fish. Yes, you read that right. One fish-whacking later, we learn that the intruder is actually the house’s rightful owner. Talk about making a first impression!

The plot follows some familiar beats but with enough renovation drama to keep things interesting. Ella, a hardware store owner who learned carpentry from her late father, faces off against Russell, a recently divorced writer who wouldn’t know a Phillips head from a flat head.

When demolition threats loom, it takes a whole town pitching in to save both the house and the romance.

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Christian Corner” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Clean content throughout, with an emphasis on community values and working together. The kind of movie where support comes through actions rather than sermons.

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco-inspired quote marks in Hollywood red. The opening quote is in the upper left corner. The closing quote is in the bottom right corner. In the center, in navy, the quote, “ ‘A dream isn’t a thing you wish for. A dream is a thing you work for’ ” — Ben Lewis, sharing Russell’s words.
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Final Cut” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

What started as a “well, maybe it won’t be terrible” turned into a genuinely enjoyable holiday film. It proves that sometimes the best Christmas movies, like the best home renovations, just need good bones and honest effort.

Subsection Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in Hollywood red, is the word, “Highlights” that’s sandwiched between gold-&-red art-deco elements.

  • Solid renovation storyline
  • Heartwarming community moments
  • Authentic winter setting
  • Balanced performances

As someone who gets excited about crown molding and properly restored hardwood floors, this movie hit my sweet spot. The renovation aspects feel genuine rather than HGTV-artificial, and watching a community come together to save a historic home? Well, that’s the kind of Christmas magic I can believe in!

Color photo of me, Alicia, authoress and writer of this blog. Because these specific posts are all about Christmas romance movies, I enhanced my photo with a Santa hat and with a bough of holly bracketing the bottom right. In the center of the holly bough are two candy canes crossed like lovers in a romantic embrace. (See what I did there? 😊)
