Review: “Christmas on the Coast” (2017)

Fancy banner done in a navy ground. On either side, Hollywood red curtains tied back with pearl-white cords. In the center of the banner are four gold-navy-&-red art deco-styled brackets framing out the words “Books by Alicia Presents” (in gold), an art deco element beneath, then “Christmas Romance Reviews” (in pearl white).
Basic banner of navy ground and very light gold art-deco brackets in the upper left and bottom right corners. In bolded pearl white, a movie title is written. This one says, “Christmas Recipe for Romance.” Beneath it, in gold, is the date (2019) the movie came out sandwiched between two gold art deco elements.

  • Clarence Gilyard Jr. as “Fletcher Reese”

  • Cait Pool as “Peyton Flynn”

  • Brian LaFontaine as “Hawk Cramer”

  • Location: New York to Harbor Pointe, South Carolina (74 degrees at Christmas!)

  • Platform: Tubi

  • Date: First viewing July 2024; Second viewing May 5, 2025

Classic Cinema Scale: Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Classic Cinema Scale.” Beneath it, three film reels—the top in gold, middle in silver, bottom in bronze. Each has words done in navy. For the gold reel, “Golden Age Worthy: Exceptional performances, chemistry, and production that capture the magic of classic Hollywood.” For the silver, “Matinee Material: Good entertainment with solid elements, though not quite reaching classic status.” And the bronze, “B-Movie Blues: Missing the mark despite potential.”
  • Golden Age WorthyAbsolutely on my all-time favorites list

Tissue Box Scale: Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Tissue Box Scale.” Beneath it, a column of tissue boxes, all in red, gold, and navy—the top is a single box, middle is two, bottom is three. Each has words done in navy. For the single box, “One Box: Keep a tissue handy, but your makeup is safe.” For the duo, “Two Boxes: You’ll definitely need those tissues, but you’ll still be presentable after.” And the trio, “Three Boxes: “Is pepperoni okay?” territory — don’t even bother with mascara!”
  • Three BoxesI defy any sentimental or romantic viewer not to shed at least one box worth!

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “First Impression” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

I first watched this during “Christmas in July” 2024 and didn’t hold much hope initially.

A romance authoress struggling with writer’s block? Sounded like potential cheese territory. But by the end, I genuinely loved it.

My second viewing confirmed my first impression — this really is a feel-good gem.

Gold-framed banner with Art Deco brackets in top corners. The banner reads: “Reality Check: Filmed on location in beautiful Saint Simons Island, Georgia, and Darien, Georgia. Visit www.StSimonsIsland.com, www.GoldenIsles.com, and www.VisitDarien.com to explore these lovely coastal communities.”
Gold-framed banner with Art Deco brackets in top corners. The banner reads: “Classic Connection: This absolutely could’ve been made in Hollywood’s Golden Age. Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan (co-stars in “Christmas in Connecticut”) would’ve made a perfect pairing for this charming premise.”
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “The Chemistry Test” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Perfect. Simply perfect.

Julie Ann Emery and Burgess Jenkins execute the love-hate-to-friends-to-lovers progression flawlessly. Their boat scene feels so natural, it’s as if we’re secretly watching real interactions rather than scripted performances.

Burgess Jenkins delivers fantastic comedic expressions and asides that flow naturally — seemingly ad-libbed.

And I’m typically harder on actresses than actors, so when I say Julie Ann Emery handles emotional crying scenes beautifully, that means something.

Clarence Gilyard, Jr. (whom I first loved as Jimmy Trivette in Walker, Texas Ranger) brings warmth to every scene.

And Peyton — thankfully a high schooler rather than a precocious child — is played wonderfully by Cait Pool without ever becoming annoying.

A+ to everyone. Well done, cast!

Gold-framed banner with Art Deco quote marks in top left and bottom right corners, done in red with navy shadows. The banner reads: “ 'It feels good taking something lost and discarded and making it beautiful again. To start over' — Brysen about his reclaimed birdhouses, but also perfectly apropos of Dru’s journey.”
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Behind the Scenes” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Coastal Christmas creates a unique decorating opportunity — laid-back and beachy while remaining festive.

Everything is nicely decorated with clever ornamentation.

A sign at Miss Ellie’s house captures it perfectly: “Starfish instead of Snowflakes.”

Gold-framed banner with Art Deco brackets in top corners. The banner reads: “Décor Pro Tip: Coastal Christmas offers a fun decorating alternative! Swap snowflakes for starfish, incorporate shells and driftwood, and embrace that breezy seaside aesthetic. Who says Christmas requires snow?”
Subsection Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in Hollywood red, are the words, “Wardrobe & Styling” that are sandwiched between gold-&-red art-deco elements.

Given the 76-degree temperatures a week before Christmas, I didn’t expect scarves and coats.

I give Dru credit for wearing dresses (women should wear them more often to showcase femininity!), though I wasn’t fond of the specific choices.

However, those black-strapped cork wedges? Très chic!

Gold-framed banner with Art Deco brackets in top corners. The banner reads: “Fashion Pro Tip: I HATE the trend of only tucking in the front portion of your top. Not only does this look slovenly, it creates the unfortunate impression that your top got caught in your panties. Probably not the look anyone’s going for.”
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “The Romance Formula” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Dru’s writing career is struggling — nothing fresh, nothing original. Ordered to create a masterpiece by February or else, she heads home for inspiration. Her brilliant plan? Write about how only SHE can bring culture and adventure to the “local yokels.”

When she and Brysen meet, they immediately clash. But as she bonds with his daughter Peyton and keeps encountering Brysen, feelings develop.

Then the town discovers her unflattering manuscript, forcing Dru to examine her own prejudices and seek forgiveness from everyone — especially Brysen, whom she now loves.

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “The First Kiss” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Several teaser moments build anticipation through interruptions, making the actual kiss even more special. When it finally happened, I exclaimed aloud, “Now THAT is a first kiss!”

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “The Second Kiss” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Even better than the first! Brysen proves himself a very good kisser, and the chemistry between them makes these moments genuinely swoon-worthy.

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Christian Corner” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Multiple faith nods appear throughout — a prominently displayed Nativity scene, Romans 10:13 on a town plaque, and themes of family and forgiveness woven naturally into the narrative.

This film also offers a wonderful teaching opportunity about finding security not in others’ opinions or even self-perception, but in how God sees us.

Dru fled her hometown feeling like an outcast. Turns out SHE was the one who didn’t understand or appreciate the town. She’s different, yes, but not despised — she just needed to get comfortable in the skin God gave her.

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Final Cut” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Oh my gosh. This is truly a wonderful movie. No snow, but a timeless Christmas romance nonetheless. Filled with laughs and scenes that will move you to tears, this absolutely belongs on my All-Time Favorites list alongside Eve’s Christmas and The Christmas Contract.

Subsection Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in Hollywood red, is the words, “Highlights” that’s sandwiched between gold-&-red art-deco elements.
  • Exceptional acting from entire cast

  • Perfect enemies-to-lovers chemistry

  • Burgess Jenkins’s comedic timing

  • Julie Ann Emery’s emotional scenes

  • Beautiful coastal Georgia locations

  • Natural faith integration

  • Genuinely moving forgiveness themes

  • Those kisses!

Subsection Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in Hollywood red, is the word, “Lowlights” that’ sandwiched between gold-&-red art-deco elements.
  • Some of Dru’s dress choices

  • That front-tuck styling trend

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Personal Notes” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

I am SO happy my first impression proved correct. This really is a feel-good movie worthy of annual rewatching.

Brysen is not only handsome but tall with a great sense of humor — the complete package. And the message about belonging, acceptance, and finding your way home resonates deeply.

The town’s bell that calls weary travelers home, the Scripture reminding us that if we call out we’ll be safe — these elements elevate this beyond typical Christmas romance into something genuinely meaningful.

Color photo of me, Alicia, authoress and writer of this blog. Because these specific posts are all about Christmas romance movies, I enhanced my photo with a Santa hat and with a bough of holly bracketing the bottom right. In the center of the holly bough are two candy canes crossed like lovers in a romantic embrace. (See what I did there? 😊)
