Review: “One Starry Christmas” (2014)

Fancy banner done in a navy ground. On either side, Hollywood red curtains tied back with pearl-white cords. In the center of the banner are four gold-navy-&-red art deco-styled brackets framing out the words “Books by Alicia Presents” (in gold), an art deco element beneath, then “Christmas Romance Reviews” (in pearl white).
Basic banner of navy ground and very light gold art-deco brackets in the upper left and bottom right corners. In bolded pearl white, a movie title is written. This one says, “One Starry Christmas.” Beneath it, in gold, is the date (2014) the movie came out sandwiched between two gold art deco elements.

Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Classic Cinema Scale.” Beneath it, three film reels—the top in gold, middle in silver, bottom in bronze. Each has words done in navy. For the gold reel, “Golden Age Worthy: Exceptional performances, chemistry, and production that capture the magic of classic Hollywood.” For the silver, “Matinee Material: Good entertainment with solid elements, though not quite reaching classic status.” And the bronze, “B-Movie Blues: Missing the mark despite potential.”
  • Matinee MaterialA delightfully cheesy but genuinely charming holiday romance that earns its stars
Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Tissue Box Scale.” Beneath it, a column of tissue boxes, all in red, gold, and navy—the top is a single box, middle is two, bottom is three. Each has words done in navy. For the single box, “One Box: Keep a tissue handy, but your makeup is safe.” For the duo, “Two Boxes: You’ll definitely need those tissues, but you’ll still be presentable after.” And the trio, “Three Boxes: “Is pepperoni okay?” territory — don’t even bother with mascara!”
  • Two BoxesThose family dinner scenes and sweet romantic moments will have you reaching for tissues between smiles

When a movie opens with its heroine daydreaming about an engagement ring on her RIGHT hand (honey, it’s the left — this is Romance 101!), you might worry. But sometimes a rocky start leads to a surprisingly smooth ride, much like our cowboy hero’s journey from horseback to ice skates.

Here’s what makes this movie special — the cast seems to have forgotten they’re being filmed, in the best possible way.

The Thanksgiving dinner scene is a master class in natural performance. Everyone moves and interacts as if they’re actually having a family dinner that just happens to be caught on camera. No awkward pauses, no stilted dialogue — just authentic family dynamics.

Luke and Holly’s rapport develops with refreshing authenticity. And can we talk about those ice-skating scenes? Nothing says “secure masculinity” quite like a cowboy willing to flail around on ice while laughing at himself. Take notes, fellas — that’s how you charm a lady!

From Chicago to New York to Texas ranch life, the settings provide perfect backdrops for our holiday romance. The Central Park scenes particularly shine, offering that magical Christmas-in-New-York atmosphere without overdoing it.

Holly’s party attire deserves special mention — festive without screaming “Christmas!” That red satin (or perhaps taffeta) dress hits the perfect note for a holiday event, and those buff-colored T-straps are ideal for unexpected line dancing. Though I still maintain an updo would’ve elevated the whole look from lovely to knockout.

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco red-&-navy brackets in the upper corners. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Fashion Pro Tip.” Beneath it, in navy, “Evening wear demands an updo! While Holly’s Christmas Eve party look is nearly perfect, those lovely ringlet curls should have been swept up. An updo not only draws attention to the décolletage and earrings but adds that extra touch of sophistication that evening wear demands.”

Sure, we’ve got our standard “city girl meets charming cowboy” setup (and really, with their “yes, ma’am” manners and down-home smiles, aren’t all movie cowboys charming by default?).

But what could’ve been cliché becomes endearing through authentic performances and genuine chemistry.

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco-inspired quote marks in Hollywood red. The opening quote is in the upper left corner. The closing quote is in the bottom right corner. In the center, in navy, the quote, “‘I believe everyone is born with an instinct to recognize their soul mates instantly. Unfortunately, not everyone has the courage to act on it. Maybe that’s why they call it magic’ — Betsy.”

Clean, wholesome content wrapped in family values and genuine connection. Plus, we finally get a worthy first (and second!) kiss that manages to be both romantic and appropriate for all audiences.

Yes, this movie is cheesy — but it’s the good kind of cheesy that puts a smile on your face and makes you giggle along with the heroine.

The Christmas Eve dinner scene, complete with impromptu country singing and surprisingly good acoustics, should be eye-rolling but instead brings tears to your eyes (in the best way possible).

  • Natural, comfortable performances
  • Genuine chemistry between leads
  • Charming family dynamics
  • Good kisses (for a change)!
  • Perfect blend of holiday romance and humor
  • That right-hand engagement-ring gaffe
  • Some stereotypical cowboy elements
  • Those Brad Pitt/George Clooney references (speak for yourself, movie!)
  • Missing updo for evening wear

Sometimes a movie surprises you not with plot twists but with how naturally everything flows. As someone who watches a lot of holiday romances, it’s refreshing to see actors so comfortable in their roles that you forget they’re acting.

And while I might quibble about hairstyle choices, when a Christmas romance makes you both laugh and cry while keeping you invested in the love story, that’s some holiday magic worth revisiting.

Color photo of me, Alicia, authoress and writer of this blog. Because these specific posts are all about Christmas romance movies, I enhanced my photo with a Santa hat and with a bough of holly bracketing the bottom right. In the center of the holly bough are two candy canes crossed like lovers in a romantic embrace. (See what I did there? 😊)
