Review: “The Best Christmas Party Ever” (2014)

Fancy banner done in a navy ground. On either side, Hollywood red curtains tied back with pearl-white cords. In the center of the banner are four gold-navy-&-red art deco-styled brackets framing out the words “Books by Alicia Presents” (in gold), an art deco element beneath, then “Christmas Romance Reviews” (in pearl white).
Basic banner of navy ground and very light gold art-deco brackets in the upper left and bottom right corners. In bolded pearl white, a movie title is written. This one says, “The Best Christmas Party Ever.” Beneath it, in gold, is the date (2014) the movie came out sandwiched between two gold art deco elements.

Classic Cinema Scale: Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Classic Cinema Scale.” Beneath it, three film reels—the top in gold, middle in silver, bottom in bronze. Each has words done in navy. For the gold reel, “Golden Age Worthy: Exceptional performances, chemistry, and production that capture the magic of classic Hollywood.” For the silver, “Matinee Material: Good entertainment with solid elements, though not quite reaching classic status.” And the bronze, “B-Movie Blues: Missing the mark despite potential.”
  • Matinee MaterialA solid holiday film with good production values, though casting choices might not work for everyone
Tissue Box Scale: Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Tissue Box Scale.” Beneath it, a column of tissue boxes, all in red, gold, and navy—the top is a single box, middle is two, bottom is three. Each has words done in navy. For the single box, “One Box: Keep a tissue handy, but your makeup is safe.” For the duo, “Two Boxes: You’ll definitely need those tissues, but you’ll still be presentable after.” And the trio, “Three Boxes: “Is pepperoni okay?” territory — don’t even bother with mascara!”
  • One BoxUnless you’re a sentimental sap like me, you probably won’t need tissues — but keep one handy for that ending

As someone who appreciates both event planning and proper professional attire, this movie caught my attention with its premise and Jennie’s party planning tips sprinkled throughout. Educational entertainment — I like it!

Our leads present an interesting dynamic — Jennie brings professionalism (despite some questionably short skirts), while Nick... well, let’s just say his perky demeanor might not be everyone’s cup of holiday cocoa. The chemistry works well enough, though some viewers (myself included) might find the hero’s enthusiasm a touch overwhelming.

Fancy banner with a thick gold border. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Classic Cinema Scale.” Beneath it, three film reels—the top in gold, middle in silver, bottom in bronze. Each has words done in navy. For the gold reel, “Remember when leading men could be charming without being perky? Think Cary Grant’s sophisticated wit or Jimmy Stewart’s earnest charm. Sometimes less enthusiasm is more!”
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Behind the Scenes” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

The Christmas party settings hit all the right festive notes, and I particularly appreciated Jennie’s party planning tips throughout. It’s refreshing to see some actual event planning knowledge woven into a holiday romance.

Subsection Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in Hollywood red, are the words, “Wardrobe & Styling” that are sandwiched between gold-&-red art-deco elements.

Professional attire proves hit-and-miss. Jennie mostly maintains a business-appropriate look (and hallelujah, she actually covers her legs, though black tights aren’t my first choice). Nick’s casual approach to office wear makes me wonder if Petra should have included a dress code clause in that inheritance!

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco red-&-navy brackets in the upper corners. In the center, in Hollywood red, the words, “Fashion Pro Tip.” Beneath it, in navy, “Can we talk about evening wear shawls for a moment? Unless they’re actually attached to your dress, they’re possibly the most cumbersome accessory ever invented. Nothing says ‘I can’t enjoy this party’ quite like keeping your arms permanently crooked at the elbow to prevent your shawl from hitting the floor. Though I suppose in an era of Barbie-nosebleed heels, uncomfortable arm positions are the least of our concerns!”
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “The Romance Formula” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Following the classic “inheritance shakes things up” plot, we watch Jennie’s hopes of taking over the business crumble when Petra’s nephew appears.

The announcement scene is particularly brutal — note to business owners: maybe don’t crush your loyal employee’s dreams quite so bluntly at a holiday party of thanksgiving!

Fancy banner with a thick gold border and art deco-inspired quote marks in Hollywood red. The opening quote is in the upper left corner. The closing quote is in the bottom right corner. In the center, in navy, the quote, “ ‘The element of surprise is the key to any successful party’ ” — Petra. (Though perhaps not when it comes to business succession plans!)
Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Christian Corner” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

Family-friendly content throughout — no questionable situations or behavior. Even the kisses stay tasteful, with both leads actually remembering how to pucker properly (finally!).

Section Header: Basic banner with a pearl-white ground. In the center, in navy, are the words, “Final Cut” that are sandwiched between gold art-deco elements.

While the story hits its marks and the performances feel natural, something about the casting keeps this from being a holiday classic. However, the party planning details and professional execution make it a solid addition to your Christmas movie playlist — even if you don’t revisit it every year.

  • Natural performances

  • Proper kissing technique (at last!)
  • Family-friendly content

  • Questionable casting choices
  • Brutal dream-crushing moment
  • Some unprofessional work attire
  • Those dreaded evening shawls

As someone who appreciates both the technical and artistic sides of event planning, I enjoyed the attention to detail in the party scenes. Though I might question some of the professional choices (both in wardrobe and personnel management), the movie delivers its message about adversity and surprise with holiday charm. As Nick says, “The mouse king represents adversity, and adversity defines us” — though in this case, perhaps it’s less about mouse kings and more about perky nephews!

Color photo of me, Alicia, authoress and writer of this blog. Because these specific posts are all about Christmas romance movies, I enhanced my photo with a Santa hat and with a bough of holly bracketing the bottom right. In the center of the holly bough are two candy canes crossed like lovers in a romantic embrace. (See what I did there? 😊)
