National Friends of the Library Week: The Wonderlands That Shaped Us

Celebrating the Libraries That Nurture Readers, Writers, and Communities

October 22, 2025 | 9-minute read

If you’ve ever stepped into a library and felt the hush settle around you — that quiet, welcoming stillness filled with the scent of paper and possibility — then you already understand why libraries matter.

For me, libraries have always been more than just buildings full of books. They’ve been sanctuaries, classrooms, creative spaces, and sometimes, even companions.

Whether I was an eager student roaming the stacks at school or an aspiring writer using the library’s computers to chase down research and inspiration, these places have played a part in every chapter of my life.

This week, as we celebrate National Friends of the Library Week, I can’t help but reflect on what libraries have given me — and what they continue to give communities everywhere: connection, learning, imagination, and a shared love for stories.

A Place That Sparked My Imagination

There are certain places from childhood that remain etched in your memory — for me, one of those is the library.

Both my local branch and my school’s library were like treasure troves of possibility.

My school’s library, especially, was a wonderland. Rows upon rows of shelves lined the walls, with freestanding bookcases and display tables filling the space. There were turning racks of paperback adventures, and a sunny corner under a bank of windows that served as the perfect reading nook.

I remember the librarian, too — always smiling, always chatting about books like each one held a secret she couldn’t wait to share.

Even the built-in shelving at the entrance, filled with magazines, made me feel like I’d stepped into a world built entirely for readers.

I can still picture it today — a safe, magical space that felt like it existed just for me.

Libraries as Anchors of Community

A public library bustling quietly with people reading, studying, and collaborating.

Libraries aren’t just places to borrow books — they’re anchors that hold communities together.

Inside their walls, people of all ages come to learn, connect, and grow. A library may host a children’s story hour in one corner, a literacy program for adults in another, and a quiet study group tucked away in back.

It’s one of the few remaining places where everyone belongs, regardless of background or bank account.

Libraries remind us that knowledge isn’t a luxury — it’s a shared gift. And every time we walk through those doors, we become part of that community of learning and imagination.

Libraries as Creative Havens

For writers, researchers, and students, libraries are sanctuaries of focus.

There was a time when I relied on the library not only for books but also for access to a computer and the internet — and for the quiet it offered.

The library was where my writing career truly began. I spent hours researching, writing, and asking librarians for help finding just the right resources.

Even now, though I can work from home, I sometimes miss the purposeful stillness of that space. There’s something deeply grounding about being surrounded by shelves of stories and knowledge while creating something of your own.

How You Can Support Your Library

Libraries are community treasures — but they thrive only with community support.

Simple Ways to Get Involved

If you’ve ever loved a book, a library has shaped you. So this week, during National Friends of the Library Week, consider giving something back.

Here are a few ways to show your appreciation:

  • Donate books or funds to help expand collections or support programs.

  • Volunteer your time — many libraries need help shelving, assisting patrons, or hosting events.

  • Join your local Friends of the Library group to stay connected and make a direct impact.

  • Attend a library event or author talk. Your presence supports not only the library but the writers it showcases.

Even small acts of support can have lasting effects — the ripple of one book or one volunteer hour can touch hundreds of lives.

Keep the Legacy Alive

Libraries belong to everyone, but their future depends on participation.

Supporting your library isn’t just about preserving books; it’s about preserving community, creativity, and connection for generations to come.

Why Libraries Still Matter

Even in the digital age, libraries continue to evolve — offering not just books but technology access, classes, and creative spaces. They remain one of the few places where curiosity still feels sacred.

Libraries are more than buildings; they are living testaments to humanity’s collective imagination. And in a world that moves faster every day, they remind us to slow down and read.

Next time: Next week, we’ll close out October with a little literary trick-or-treat fun — celebrating Books for Treats Day on Halloween! I’ll share how books make the sweetest gift of all.

What’s your favorite library memory? Did you have a special librarian, a favorite reading nook, or a book that first captured your imagination?

Share your stories in the comments — and, if you can, stop by your local library this week to thank the people who make them possible.
