— The Experience behind My Stories —

Young girl reading alone by window light symbolizing refuge found in books.

If you pick up an A.J. Strickland novel expecting a soft, sanitized version of life, you may be surprised by what you find.

My stories deal with real people facing real pain in a real world. They wrestle with trauma, brokenness, temptation, violence, fear, shame, grief, and the kinds of wounds many people quietly carry every day.

Sometimes those wounds come from choices. Other times, they come from things done to us.

But while my stories may walk through darkness, they never glorify it.

That’s the difference.

I don’t write stories about darkness because I’m fascinated by evil. I write them because I know what it is to hurt. I know what it is to walk through difficult seasons and wonder where God is in the middle of them.

And I know there are countless others asking those same questions.

So my novels don’t look away from pain. They walk into it carrying light.

And at the heart of every A.J. Strickland story is the belief that no one is beyond love, healing, redemption, or hope.

Why My Stories Don’t Look Away from Darkness

Rainy city street at night representing real-world darkness.

Before we can talk about the romance, the heroes, or even the hope woven through my stories, we first need to talk about the reality they’re rooted in.

A.J. Strickland novels do not exist in a polished version of life where pain stays conveniently off-page. They step directly into difficult places because real people live there every day.

But realism alone is not the point.

Hope is.

Why My Stories Don’t Avoid Hard Topics

There are some Christians who believe stories should avoid difficult realities altogether. But life doesn’t work that way.

People are raped. People are trafficked. People are abused, abandoned, manipulated, addicted, wounded, and broken. And Christians aren’t exempt from suffering simply because they believe in God.

Bad things happen to Believers and non-Believers every day.

And if any of them picks up a book looking for hope, I don’t want them to feel unseen.

That’s why my novels are direct. I do not dilute trauma into something vague or “safe” simply to make readers comfortable. I write honestly because people who have suffered already know what suffering looks like.

But honesty is only half the equation.

The other half is healing.

My stories walk readers through darkness while reminding them that darkness does not get the final word.

Because no one should ever feel unloved, unseen, or unimportant.

Real-World Christianity

One of the phrases I use for A.J. Strickland novels is real-world Christianity.

By that, I don’t mean Christians should become worldly. Scripture is clear that we are to live in the world, not be of it. Christians are not meant to absorb darkness into themselves.

But neither are we meant to hide from hurting people.

Jesus didn’t.

He stepped directly into humanity’s suffering. He sat with broken people. He touched lepers. He defended the shamed. He healed the wounded. He entered the darkest places imaginable carrying the light of God with Him.

That’s the kind of Christianity I want reflected in my stories.

Not fearful Christianity.
Not performative Christianity.

But compassionate Christianity.

Christianity that walks into darkness carrying light.

Hope Is Always Waiting at the End

Though my stories may contain painful moments, readers will never be abandoned inside hopelessness.

There is always movement toward healing.

Toward restoration.

Toward love.

Toward redemption.

The world is dark—but light is always more powerful.

The Men—and Love Stories—I Write

Protective man holding woman in the rain representing emotional and romantic safety.

At the heart of every A.J. Strickland novel is romance—but not the shallow or disposable kind modern culture often celebrates.

My stories explore love that protects, heals, transforms, and fights for connection in a world that often seems determined to destroy it.

And that begins with the men themselves.

Masculine Heroes without Apology

The men in my stories are not all alike.

Some are wounded. Some are dangerous. Some are emotionally restrained while others are openly intense. Some already know Christ deeply while others must find Him through the course of the story.

But they all share one thing:

They are masculine without apology.

They protect.

They lead.

They sacrifice.

They love deeply and fiercely.

And while they may be rough-edged with the world, there is always tenderness reserved for her.

Love as Healing—not Escapism

I love romance because love changes people.

Not in shallow, magical ways—but in deeply human ones.

A healthy love story can challenge fear. It can soften grief. It can restore trust. It can teach a wounded person that they are worthy of tenderness, protection, patience, and devotion.

For some characters, love becomes the first truly safe place they have ever known.

That doesn’t mean romance solves every problem.

But it can become part of healing.

And I think many readers long for that kind of story because so much modern media treats love as disposable, transactional, or degrading.

I don’t.

Love matters to me.

Marriage matters to me.

Bonding matters to me.

And I want readers to feel that when they step into my stories.

Why the Romance Feels Intense

A.J. Strickland romances are emotionally intense because the stakes are emotionally intense.

When someone has been deeply wounded, intimacy means more.

Trust means more.

Being seen means more.

Being cherished means more.

So when my characters fall in love, it is rarely casual.

It is transformational.

Why Intimacy Matters in My Stories

Couple embracing in warm candlelight representing intimacy and emotional healing.

One of the most discussed aspects of A.J. Strickland novels is the inclusion of spice and intimacy.

But intimacy in my stories is never there simply for shock value or empty titillation. It serves a deeper emotional, relational, and spiritual purpose within the story itself.

A Christian Perspective on Sex

Next week, I’ll be diving much deeper into this topic, but because intimacy is part of A.J. Strickland novels, I want to touch on it briefly here.

Sex matters.

God created it.

And yet much of modern culture portrays sex as:

  • casual

  • degrading

  • performative

  • emotionless

  • transactional

  • disconnected from commitment and covenant

I reject that vision completely.

In my stories, intimacy is emotional, spiritual, physical, vulnerable, bonding, and deeply human.

Sometimes it’s passionate.

Sometimes it’s healing.

Sometimes it becomes the moment a character finally realizes they are safe, loved, and no longer defined by what was done to them.

What Readers Won’t Find in My Stories

Although my stories are realistic, there are lines I refuse to cross.

You will not find:

  • hopelessness glorified

  • cruelty celebrated

  • femininity mocked

  • weak or passive heroes

  • humiliation masquerading as romance

  • darkness without purpose

  • graphic animal abuse

  • pain exploited simply for shock value.

There is enough ugliness in the world already.

I don’t write to deepen despair.

I write to remind people that healing is still possible.

Stories for Readers Who Want Hope in the Middle of Reality

Sunlight breaking through storm clouds representing hope and healing.

Maybe you’re tired of shallow romance.

Maybe you want stories that acknowledge how painful life can be without drowning in cynicism.

Maybe you want emotionally mature heroes and heroines who fight for love instead of mocking it.

Maybe you want stories that are sensual but still meaningful.

Maybe you want realism with hope.

That is what you’ll find in an A.J. Strickland novel.

Not perfection.

Not escapism detached from reality.

But stories that step into broken places believing healing is still possible.

Because I believe people are worth fighting for.

And because I believe no darkness is stronger than the light of Christ.

Next time: This Sunday, I’ll be reposting a special Father’s Day piece celebrating the fathers, father figures, and protective men who shape our lives in quiet but powerful ways.

Then, next Wednesday, we’ll continue this series with one of the most talked-about aspects of my fiction:

“Why My Stories Include Spice — and Why It Matters.”
