How Strength, Restraint, and Devotion Shape the Men in My Stories

Series: WHY I WRITE: The Heart behind My Stories

March 18, 2026 | 9-minute read
There’s a reason readers respond so strongly to the men in my books.
They don’t just like them.
They fall for them.
I’ve had women close Unconditional Love and say, “I want him.”
I’ve had my editrix beg for more Colton before Book One is even out.
So what is it about these heroes?
It isn’t dominance.
It isn’t swagger.
It isn’t bravado.
It’s strength that restrains itself.
Let me explain.
I Write Men Who Are Strong Enough to Restrain Themselves

There is a difference between power and control.
Power can take.
Control demands.
But strength — real strength — chooses when not to act.
The men in my stories feel deeply. They desire fully. They’re not indifferent or passive. When Xavier sees Querida, he knows. When Colton meets Aviana, he’s already gone.
But they do not use that desire to push.
They state their intentions plainly. They make their attraction known. And then they step back.
They’re willing to take friendship if that’s all she can offer.
They’re willing to wait if that’s what healing requires.
That restraint is not weakness.
It’s discipline.
Desire That Honors
Desire in my stories is not predatory. It is not manipulative. It is not transactional.
It honors.
When Querida struggles with trauma, Xavier doesn’t rush her. On their wedding night, he suggests simply holding her so she can learn to feel safe. When she falters later, even on their honeymoon, he doesn’t sulk or pressure. He steadies her. He reassures her. He waits.
When Aviana carries shame from her past, Colton doesn’t exploit it. He confronts the lie that wounded her and helps her see her worth clearly.
My heroes prove something simple:
A man can want a woman fiercely…
and still put her comfort before his gratification.
That is the kind of masculinity I believe in.
I Write Heroes Who Protect Dignity Before Possession

Both Querida and Aviana enter their stories wounded.
One is afraid of men.
The other doubts her worth.
They do not need a hero who conquers.
They need a hero who guards.
Protection, in my books, is not about claiming ownership.
It’s about defending dignity.
Xavier walks beside Querida through her healing. He doesn’t try to erase her fear; he helps her face it safely.
Colton pledges to help Aviana find her kidnapped family, even when she doesn’t fully trust him. He gives first. He sacrifices first. He proves himself before expecting anything in return.
That is protection.
Not possession.
Respect Before Romance
Romance in my stories grows out of respect.
The man sees her clearly.
He values her completely.
He refuses to reduce her to what she can give him physically.
He understands that intimacy without trust is hollow.
And so he builds trust first.
My heroes protect a woman’s heart before they ever ask for her body.
That order matters.
I Write Men Who Admire Strength in a Woman

My heroines are strong.
Not hardened.
Not combative.
But capable, intelligent, and self-aware.
And my heroes don’t feel threatened by that.
They aren’t intimidated by feminine strength.
They don’t shrink in its presence.
They don’t attempt to dominate it.
Instead, they admire it.
They recognize excellence and respond to it with steadiness, not insecurity.
Their strength and her strength are different — and that difference is what allows them to complement one another.
They aren’t competing for control.
They’re building partnership.
Complement, Not Compete
The world often frames relationships as a battle.
Who leads?
Who yields?
Who wins?
I reject that framework entirely.
In my stories, the man doesn’t need to weaken the woman to feel strong.
And the woman doesn’t need to belittle the man to feel empowered.
They stand in their own strengths.
And together, those strengths fit.
Masculinity and femininity are not enemies in my books.
They are allies.
I Write Heroes Women Fall in Love With

I don’t write heroes women tolerate.
I write heroes women want.
I have watched readers finish Unconditional Love and say, “I want him.”
I have listened to women ask for more Colton before his story is even fully told.
They aren’t responding to arrogance.
They’re responding to devotion.
Xavier chooses Querida immediately — and then proves that choice with patience.
Colton chooses Aviana immediately — and then proves that choice with sacrifice.
They commit early.
But they earn that commitment every day after.
The Kind of Man You Hope Is Real
Their love is not loud.
It’s steady. It shows up. It waits. It stays.
When healing takes time, they remain.
When intimacy must slow, they slow.
When she doubts herself, they remind her who she is.
Women don’t fall for these men because they’re dominant.
They fall for them because they’re devoted.
Because they make a woman feel seen.
Respected.
Cherished.
That is the kind of man I write.
And judging by the response from readers?
It’s the kind of man women still hope exists.
Next time: In the next post in the WHY I WRITE series, we turn the lens the other direction:
Why I Write the Heroines I Do…
Because strength in a man only works when paired with strength in a woman.
Stories begin with imagination.
But sometimes… they awaken longing.
So if you’ve ever closed one of my books and thought,
“Now THAT’S a real man,”
I’d love to hear from you.
